Do YOU want to help improve the lives of kids facing life’s greatest developmental and behavioral challenges?  Damar is looking for YOU-- a talented, motivated and detail oriented Teacher-- to make a difference in a variety of skilled tasks to educate students at Damar Freeway Academy! You would have the opportunity to set the tone of instruction for the class, develop and participate in activities promoting skill development identified in Individual Education Plans (IEPs) including academics, behavioral stability, communication skills, social functioning skills, independence (self help and daily living) skills, and vocational skills. You would also be responsible for completing state assessments such as ISTAR or ISTEP, and other specific assessments (WIAT-II, ABAS-II, CBC, WRAT, CBMs, FBAs).

 

Who would I teach? In your classroom at Damar Freeway Academy, you would make a difference by teaching young boys and adolescent girls receiving special education services with mild to moderate functioning diagnosis, and a full scale IQ of less than 75. You would have the support of 1 Teacher Assisant, behavior support 1:1s, and residential team members!

 

When would I teach? Monday-Friday 8:30a-3:00p

Remarkable way you will make a difference...

  • Develops and implements standards-based IEPs, daily/weekly class and lesson plans.
  • Teaches students to acquire academic, self-help, daily living and social skills, as stated in the standards-based IEP.
  • Completes reports on the standards-based IEP goals, skills and classroom performance of each student.
  • Ensures that all activities, services and programs through Damar are conducted in a manner that is sensitive to and shows respect for the cultural and ethnic diversity for all Damar students.
  • Conducts and supervises recreational and life enrichment activities as they relate to the school day.
  • Serves as a resource by tutoring students in academic subjects, as identified in the standards-based IEP.
  • Actively participates in staff training programs designed to increase overall skills.
  • Participates in programs designed to aid in the habilitation and training/treatment of the students.
  • Performs varied services including instructional, clerical, supervisory, housekeeping, and behavioral management duties as they relate to the school day.
  • Observes, records, and reports the condition and behavior of the students, including maintaining daily records of events during the school day, particularly those in the standards-based IEP.
  • Directs support staff within the classroom to ensure safe environment conducive to learning.
  • Consistently implements behavior management plans to reduce clients’ maladaptive behaviors and promote appropriate social behaviors.
  • Effectively responds to and manages crisis situations, which may include student physical aggression.
  • Completes incident reports, including reporting any suspected exploitation, abuse or neglect of a student.
  • Operates Damar vehicles and or personal vehicles to transport residents or perform other work-related duties.
  • Updates Harmony Student Information System daily for attendance, class planning, communication, record keeping.
  • Utilizes IDOE’s Learning Connection.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures as defined in the Employee Handbook and Damar Operational Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Takes pride and ownership in Damar’s facilities and assigned work areas.
  • Attends mandatory staff meeting and other meetings as assigned.
  • Completes and updates mandatory training and other licensure related items in a timely manner.
  • Maintains documentation that is accurate and legible.
  • Completes incident reports, including reporting any suspected exploitation, abuse, or neglect of a client.

What you need to be considered...

  • Bachelor’s degree in education and teaching license required.
  • Special Ed license preferred.
  • Experience in Special Education desired.
  • Highly Qualified status required (ability to fulfill Highly Qualified requirements within 3 years).
  • Minimum age of 21 depending on program and / or department requirements.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license and driving record that meets eligibility requirements of Damar’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving).
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical and screening.
  • Must meet background screening requirements of program(s) assigned to.

Essential Job Functions:

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 35lbs); to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction
