What is a Recreation Assistant?

A recreational assistant is responsible for implementing a variety of activities related to health, physical education, recreation and aquatics for individuals served by Damar.

Where would I work with clients?

For this particular role, you could work on our Children's Residential campus located at 6067 Decatur Boulevard in Indianapolis.

Remarkable way you will be making a difference...

  • Assists the Recreation Director in providing aquatic assessments, training and certification services for clients and staff.
  • Assists the Recreation Director in maintaining inventory of all supplies affiliated with the pool and fitness center.
  • Participates in maintaining Damar’s pool and fitness facility.
  • Maintains neat, chronological and timely records of assigned recreational events and activities.
  • Will adhere to all policies and procedures as defined in the Employee Handbook and Damar Operational Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Attends mandatory staff meeting and other meetings as assigned.
  • Completes and updates mandatory training and other licensure related items in a timely manner.
  • Maintains documentation that is accurate and legible.
  • Implements activities utilizing Damar’s pool and fitness center as scheduled by the Recreation Director.
  • Assists the Recreation Director in conducting pre- and post-testing or resident fitness abilities.
  • Conducts adaptive physical education classes for on-grounds school.

What you need to be considered...

  • Be at least 21 to work in our Children's Residential program 
  • Be able to provide formal proof of a high school diploma or GED
  • Prior experience implementing recreational programs for children with developmental and/or emotional disabilities is desired
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment physical
  • Favorably meet and maintain Damar’s background screening
  • Be clear of any felony convictions, substantiated charges of neglect or other disqualifying criminal offenses

Essential Job Functions:

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 35lbs); to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
